In the Zone for Learning
In the Zone for Learning (ITZ) is a framework that focuses on how to engage learners to be in a calm yet alert state for learning – in other words in the zone for learning.
We want learners to be calm yet alert, so that they can better understand and complete activities that help them understand their world and express themselves.
Key information about the brain
The ‘Hand Model of the Brain’ by Dr Dan Siegel
[Hint – Watch Dr Siegel explain ‘The Hand Model of the Brain’ online.]
We process information in the same way in our brains.
When our learners or we ‘flip our lid’ it means the part of our brain in charge of:
- decision making,
- impulse control
- social skills
- critical thinking
- problem solving
is not working properly (or offline).
How the brain works
Repetition is important. Repetition of positive, caring, meaningful and relevant experiences can rewire our learners/our brains.
We want our learners to PRACTISE – PRACTISE – PRACTISE the skills they will need now and later in life. If you practise something over and over again, nerve cells form a long-term relationship, which is called an identity or neural network.
